Funded childcare

Your hours can be used per week for 38 weeks of the year (during school term time). You are also
able use your hours for up to 51 weeks if you use fewer than your total hours per week.
You can use Tax-Free Childcare or Universal Credit for Childcare whilst claiming your 15 or 30 hours
of childcare support.

 
3 and 4 year olds

In England, all parents and carers of 3 and 4-year-olds are entitled to 15 hours a week childcare
support with registered childcare providers. Eligible working parents and carers of children aged 3-4
can also get an additional 15 hours childcare support, bringing their total up to 30 hours a week.

Terrific Twos

Some eligible parents of 2-year-old children may also be entitled to 15 hours childcare support, if
they receive some additional forms of government support.
Parent/carers receive:

  • Universal Credit, and your household income is £15,400 a year or less after tax, not including

benefit payments

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  •  Income related Employment and Support Allowance

  •  The Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit

  •  Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit (or both), and your household income is £16,190 a year

or less before tax

  • Working Tax Credit 4-week run on (the payment you get when you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

Apply for a code

It usually takes 20 minutes to apply. You may find out if you’re eligible straight away, but it can take
up to 7 days. Once your application has been approved, you’ll get a code for free childcare to give to your childcare provider.

 

What you need to know

You have to reconfirm your eligibility every 3 months. If you apply more than 3 months before the
term starts, you’ll have to reconfirm your eligibility in your account in order to keep your code valid.
